Discipline, precision and grace — three words that define Isabella Walsh, a ballerina with the Royal Danish Ballet whose world moves between the stage and the understated streets of Copenhagen, the city she calls home. With appearances in Vogue and collaborations with Cartier and Chanel, Isabella embodies a quiet elegance that feels entirely her own.
We flew two hours north to Copenhagen to spend an afternoon with Isabella as she orbits through her day, moving gently to the rhythm of her natural flow.
Emmanuel: Repetition and ritual often form the foundation of mastery. What does a typical morning look like for you and how do you prepare yourself for the day ahead?
Isabella: Since so much of my lifestyle requires me to be fully present in my body, I begin my day by grounding myself through intentional stillness. I start with 10 to 20 minutes of meditation, followed by morning elixirs and tonics that I prepare myself, before moving into ballet class and rehearsals.
Emmanuel: Take us back to the beginning. When did ballet first enter your life, and at what point did you realise it could become a career?
Isabella: Ballet truly felt like a calling. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it as a child, but it was something I kept being drawn towards, which inevitably led me to pursue it full-time.
There was something about the steady progression that became an obsession. When you bring together focus, discipline and presence with what is innately within you, that’s where the magic happens — where you enter a state of flow.
Emmanuel: Outside the studio, do you enjoy cooking? If so, how do you find time to shop, cook and slow down?
Isabella: I’m deeply passionate about what I put into my body. Cooking gives me an opportunity to nourish and recover, but also to get creative — experimenting with interesting combinations of flavours and fresh produce. It becomes a form of meditation for me, a chance to slow down and be present.
Emmanuel: Choose one season to live in forever: summer, autumn or winter and what draws you to it?
Isabella: I think I feel most alive in the summertime. There’s a sense of freedom that allows me to evolve and grow — to try new things, have new experiences, meet new people and discover parts of myself that can sometimes get lost due to my season being fast-paced and demanding.
Emmanuel: Swimming requires a unique balance of strength and serenity. What keeps you returning to the water and what does it offer that ballet does not?
Isabella: Swimming asks for a different kind of presence than ballet. In the studio, everything is shaped, held and seen — every movement is intentional. In the water, there’s a release from that constant visibility. It’s quieter, more internal.
I keep returning to it because it strips everything back. There’s no mirror, no audience, no expectation. It offers a kind of solitude that ballet doesn’t always allow.
Emmanuel: Looking ahead, what can we expect next from Isabella Walsh, on stage, in the studio or beyond?
Isabella: I’ve been exploring different mediums of expression and evolving beyond the stage. Acting, modelling and creative collaborations are all directions I’m excited to explore. Ultimately, storytelling is what keeps me connected to every project I take on — it’s the common thread through everything I do.
What excites me most is working with people and brands who understand that my movement, essence and elegance aren’t confined to a tutu and pointe shoes. Ballet will always be my foundation, but I’m excited to explore where that foundation can take me — and how it can be expressed beyond the stage.
